Teaching Security Operations Center

The Teaching Security Operations Center (TSOC) at the University of Oregon offers a range of managed cybersecurity services to undeserved clients across Oregon while immersing students in an unparalleled hands-on learning experience. Our students develop critical job skills while defending real-world clients against evolving cybersecurity threats.

What We Do

Approximately 265,000 cybersecurity positions are unfilled across US companies and government agencies (Dice), and the average annual salary for cybersecurity professionals is more than $130K (ZipRecruiter). TSOC equips students with the expertise needed to excel in cybersecurity roles and ensures they are well-prepared for high-demand, high-paying positions, both regionally and nationally.

TSOC offers an unparalleled, hands-on learning experience for students pursuing cybersecurity majors within the Computer Science Department. As a signature course, TSOC immerses students in a real-world, fully operational security operations center (SOC), where they rotate through critical SOC functions and gain practical expertise in defending against today's evolving cyber threats. Each activity is thoughtfully integrated into the broader cybersecurity curriculum, ensuring that students not only learn foundational theory but also apply their knowledge in real-time scenarios.

By bridging the gap between classroom learning and professional practice, TSOC uniquely equips students with the skills, experience, and confidence needed to excel in the growing field of cybersecurity. Whether it’s identifying vulnerabilities, responding to incidents, or monitoring threats, students are empowered to make a tangible impact while preparing for in-demand roles in the cybersecurity workforce. TSOC also supports a growing number of experimental research and capstone projects in cybersecurity by facilitating the deployment of cutting- edge solutions in an operational setting in a safe and private manner.

TSOC services are provided in partnership with major cybersecurity vendors.

Our Mission

At the UO, we are dedicated to providing our students with hands-on learning experiences that bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application. The Training Security Operations Center (TSOC) is a unique educational initiative designed to immerse students in the daily operations of a security operations center (SOC) where they monitor client networks, respond to incidents, and manage threats under the guidance of cybersecurity experts.

Our mission is to equip the next generation of cybersecurity professionals with the hands-on experience, technical skills, and critical thinking abilities necessary to protect and defend digital infrastructure against evolving cyber threats. By integrating real-world operations into the educational process, we prepare our students to make an immediate impact in the cybersecurity workforce.

Through the TSOC program, we provide essential services to small organizations, including K-12 schools, non-profits, small counties, and local government agencies, while simultaneously offering our students a unique learning environment.

TSOC Team

The TSOC program is supported by a dedicated team of security professionals who bring both academic expertise and practical industry experience. Our faculty and mentors work closely with students, offering guidance, feedback, and industry insights.
