Internships and Capstones

Gain Real-World Experience

Doing work in your selected field outside the classroom is an excellent way for students to expand their critical skillset and demonstrate to employers that you have experience and knowledge that puts you ahead of your competition. Through internships and capstones, you’ll gain significant experience, build a strong portfolio, and show employers you’re ready to make an impact as soon as they hire you. In the School of Computer and Data Sciences (SCDS), the opportunity to get hands-on experience before graduating is available through SCDS-sourced internships and capstone projects.

Internships in Tech

There are many opportunities for motivated students to work directly with a company or organization as part of an internship/externship. The SCDS Internships Database provides a centralized database of internships in computer and data science, and cybersecurity. You can browse listings to learn about potential employers, gain insight into the hiring process, and find positions that align with your professional goals.

Our students have also found success seeking internships on career websites like Handshake, as well as via career fairs.

If you’re interested in receiving internship credits, please reach out to your major’s department for more information.

Career and Internships Seminar

The Career and Internships Seminar (CS 407) prepares students to pursue internships and early-career roles through workshops, networking, and hands-on guidance. You will learn strategies for resume building, portfolio preparation, interviewing, and job and internship searches.

All SCDS majors are welcome.

Work as an Intern Abroad

The UO offers specific pathways into work opportunities internationally with Global Education Oregon. The GlobalWorks Internship program accepts applications every quarter to pair students with an organization for a quarter-long internship abroad.

Working internationally is a great way to distinguish yourself as a candidate once you graduate. Plus, the cultural and global experience you will gain only enhances the hands-on experience.

Capstones

SCDS offers as many opportunities as possible for students to get hands-on experience in their chosen field. One of these opportunities is a capstone course. In this course students will work on a project that allows them to demonstrate their classroom learnings, test their knowledge and get feedback from industry partners. A capstone project lets you and your team members carry a project from start to finish. You’ll work with industry mentors on a real-world problem, gaining hands-on experience and building a portfolio that highlights your readiness for professional work.

Data science majors need a GPA of 3.75 or above to enroll in a capstone.
