We Believe in Learning by Doing
At the School of Computer and Data Sciences (SCDS), learning goes beyond the classroom. As a student, you will get hands-on experience through projects, research, and real-world work with industry and community partners. These opportunities help you build practical skills, tackle open-ended problems, and show employers you are ready for what comes next.
Industry Engagement – Internships, Capstones, and Co-ops
SCDS offers students a wide variety of opportunities to take what you’ve learned in class and use it in real-world settings. These experiences help you build practical skills, work on meaningful projects, and understand what professional work in your field looks like.
The SCDS Internships Database provides a centralized list of internships in computer science, data science, and cybersecurity. You can browse listings to learn about potential employers, gain insight into the hiring process, and find positions that align with your professional goals.
Career Support
The Career and Internships Seminar course (CS 407) prepares you to pursue early-career positions and internships through workshops, networking, and hands-on guidance. Open to all SCDS students, you'll learn strategies for résumé building, portfolio preparation, interviewing, and job and internship searches.
Get Involved in Undergraduate Research
Faculty members regularly recruit undergraduate students to conduct cutting-edge scientific research. As a student researcher, you get hands-on experience with the scientific method, looking for solutions to complex scientific problems. You gain experience in problem solving, critical thinking, and being part of a team working toward a specific and clear goal. What this looks like depends on the type of project and the group doing the research: students are encouraged to talk to professors to explore options.
Student Groups
Getting experience to prepare for a career doesn’t always have to happen through classroom and professional connections. Connecting with fellow students through student groups offers you opportunities for more personal and self-directed work. SCDS is home to multiple student groups focused on activities specific to computer and data sciences, mathematics, and cybersecurity. You will find plenty of opportunities to connect with your fellow peers and engage outside of the classroom. Check out the groups currently hosted or start your very own.
Hands-on Cybersecurity Experience
Cybersecurity majors have access to two singular opportunities to gain experience in cybersecurity: TSOC and the Cyber Risk Clinic.
